7 kW vs 11 kW vs 22 kW home chargers: what's right for you?

Faster isn't always better. Most Australian EV owners are fine with a 7 kW charger — but if you have three-phase power and heavy daily driving, an 11 kW or 22 kW charger can be worth it.

Real-world charge speeds

7 kW single-phase: about 40 km of range per hour. Full overnight charge on almost any EV.

11 kW three-phase: about 60 km per hour. Meaningful for daytime top-ups.

22 kW three-phase: about 120 km per hour. Overkill for most home use, but useful for high-km drivers or shared households.

What your EV can actually accept

Many EVs cap their onboard AC charging at 11 kW — a 22 kW charger won't go faster than the car allows.

Some entry-level EVs cap at 7 kW single-phase — an 11 kW charger gives no benefit at all.

Check your EV's onboard charger spec before paying for a higher-capacity unit.

Cost impact

7 kW: cheapest install, no supply upgrade needed for most homes.

11 kW / 22 kW: needs three-phase supply — retrofitting three-phase can add $2,000–$5,000 if you don't already have it.
