Longer cable runs, three-phase installs, apartment or townhouse jobs, and trenching under paths push quotes higher — often into the $1,200–$2,000 range.
If you also need the installer to supply the charger unit itself, add roughly $700–$1,500 depending on brand and features.
What drives the price up
Cable run distance from the switchboard to the parking spot — every extra metre of cable, conduit, and labour adds cost.
Switchboard upgrades — older boards may need a new main switch, RCD, or a full replacement to safely run a 7 kW charger.
Three-phase power — three-phase installs cost more but unlock faster 11 kW / 22 kW charging.
Apartments and townhouses — strata coordination, longer runs from meter cupboards, and load management often add to the price.
How to compare quotes fairly
Make sure every quote covers the same scope: charger unit (if any), cable, RCD/breaker, install labour, and certificate of electrical safety.
Ask each installer whether the price includes any switchboard work — that's the most common surprise line item.
Cheapest isn't always best. Check warranty, whether they're a licensed contractor, and whether they'll return for service if something goes wrong.
