Single phase vs three phase EV charging: which do you need?

The short answer: single-phase gets you a 7 kW charger — enough to add ~40 km of range per hour and fully charge most EVs overnight. Three-phase lets you install an 11 kW or 22 kW charger, which is faster but only worth it in specific cases.

What single-phase gives you

A 7 kW (32A) home charger. Overnight this comfortably tops up most daily driving.

Cheaper install — no supply upgrade needed for the vast majority of Australian houses.

Compatible with every mainstream EV sold in Australia.

When three-phase is worth it

You already have three-phase power at the property (common in newer builds and some larger homes).

You do very high daily kilometres and need faster daytime top-ups.

You want to future-proof for a second EV or a higher-capacity charger down the track.

Upgrading from single to three-phase

Retrofitting three-phase is expensive — often $2,000–$5,000+ depending on the network — and rarely worth it for a single home EV.

If you already have three-phase, tell your installer up front so they quote the correct charger and cabling.
